Visit These Towns During Your Holidays To Gran Canaria
If you plan to enjoy your holidays to Gran Canaria, remember to explore the island’s number of towns. Several of the island’s populated centers have a plethora of sites that you can see and enjoy. Take for example, these three towns.
1. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
This is the capital of Gran Canaria. The city was in fact the initial stop of Christopher Columbus’s expedition on his way back from the Americas. People living in the city celebrate the occasion through a tribute called the Hermitage of San Antonio Abad where the legendary pioneer prayed. The city also has a cool attraction, the Las Canteras beach and diving zone, which is right smack at the heart of the city. Additionally, this beach is declared as a protected area. But wait, there’s more! you can visit other attractions such as the Museo Canario (the most important archaeology museum in the Canary Islands), the Las Palmas Cathedral, and the Plaza del Espiritu Santo.
2. Aguimes
If you head east, you would arrive at the painstakingly preserved old town of Aguimes. The restoration, which is centered on its old parish and city square, gives the place the calming atmosphere of an old traditional Canarian town. Just a few miles away are well-preserved caves in the protected area of the Guayadeque Ravine. Here you can find a beautiful church built into the hillside and restaurants that are built within a few of the caves! Also, the district where Aguimes is located is known all over the world as a scuba diving paradise with its vast marine reserves.
3. Galdar
Galdar is a town situated north of the island. Surrounded by mountains and valleys, it is the perfect place to go if you want peace, quiet, and nature. You encounter vast tracts of banana plantations, the town’s main agricultural industry. There are also outstandingly preserved archaeological sites such as the Cueva Pintada and Cenobio de Valeron’s communal silos and tombs. You can also find here the port of Sardina del Norte where Christopher Columbus got supplies for his expedition.
